My name is Lizzie. I am a dark grey sable German Shepherd Dog ("GSD"). I was born 11-6-2005. I came to BDBH from a shelter in South Carolina.
I enjoy being with my people, like any GSD, it is key that I stay well socialized with humans and dogs. I do well with my foster parents pack and while I don't currently live with cats, I could. I adore puppies and I am very appropriate with them.
I don't need to be confined in the house, because I am a very well behaved girl. I am housebroken, don't chew on anything inappropriate and don't get on furniture, unless you let me :)
I do have bilateral hip dysplasia. BDBH has taken me to an orthopedic surgeon and he suggested I take a joint supplement called Dasaquin MSM http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/vet/products/Dasuquin-for-dogs.aspx daily and an Adequan injection once a month. Adequan www.adequan.com is an injectable substance known as a "polysulfated glycosaminoglycan". Adequan has been proven to be preferentially taken up by inflamed joints when injected into the dog's muscles. It soothes and lubricates the joint, naturally reducing inflammation and pain by reducing friction. Even better, instead of just masking pain as NSAIDs, i.e., Rimadyl, Deramaxx, do, it actually helps to rebuild cartilage in the damaged joint. It's not just pain control, it's therapy.
I love to go for walks and don't be fooled, I can run in my foster parents' yard with the best of the pack. In fact, it is important to balance my exercise/play to keep my muscles strong, yet not overdo. I also love to go for car rides.
I know such things as "come, sit, down, shake take, give, OK, and my favorite--Lizzie goooood girl". I do need a leader with firm, fair, and loving guidance or I will feel that I need to step up and be your leader, which is not healthy.
To learn more about Lizzie, please email her foster parents, Michael and Darcy at darcydrons@gmail.com

Hi, my name is Jessie, affectionately referred to as Jess. I am most likely a Greyhound mix and I am about 6 years old. I was found running the streets in Ohio. I now live with BDBH foster parents who hug me all the time and help me to hang out with the other dogs in the house. I even seek out affection and feel confident in the middle of the pack when I know that they will give me some attention. So with all of my crazy journeys here is where I am now:
• I will most likely always be timid, but I have really become much more sure of myself than I was. I have even been to my foster dad’s office and met everyone and they really thought I was very sweet (and I really am).
• I sometimes seek the security of my crate when things feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t last long.
• I love to lay on the couch with my foster dad and curl up with him. He pets me and it makes me feel very secure.
• I could live in a house with another dog as I get along with all dogs, but I do very well on my own with lots of loving from my people.
• My foster parents adore me and tell me I am the “easiest” dog to have around.
• I eat very well now (almost 4 cups a day) and yes I still have a model’s figure.
• I also enjoy being with older children, but they must be respectful children.
I am looking for a forever home with someone who will love me for who I am. I am not a ball fetcher, nor a dog who will be a social butterfly. I am an awesome companion and want someone who will be confident introducing me to new situations, even though sometimes I may be somewhat timid. I want to continue to be social even though it may be hard, I don’t want to be forgotten at home. I am fairly low energy, but would love walks and hanging out with someone. I need a fenced in yard as I could get startled and normally I run to the house, but don’t want to get spooked and run away again, it is very scary. I do fine in the car and going into strange places. I am really a great companion because I just want your love.
As I am sensitive, but again, in a sweet way, and somewhat concerned by noise and bustle. I would do best in a calm/quiet household.
My foster parents encourage anyone considering giving me a forever home to please research the Greyhound breed, as my temperament is very much that of a Greyhound.
A physical fence is required in Jessie's forever home.

Meet Halo meaning "Special Angel". Halo arrived in NY from a high kill shelter in KY. Halo is a 2 year old German Shepherd mix who weighs in about 35-40 pounds. (As small as she is, she has a lot of shepherd in her, however we think her issues may have stunned her growth quite a bit). Halo has settled in with her foster family and loves all her canine friends. She adores people and just loves to be loved on.
Halo is a very special needs girl. When we pulled Halo, we knew she had what looked to be a birth defect to her front left leg. Her leg cuts off just after the elbow joint and then a small portion of the bone folds inward towards her body and then her leg ends. We were unsure of if she may need her leg amputated the rest of the way or if it was not a problem for her. Halo saw a vet in KY prior to coming to NY and they thought maybe she had a broken shoulder in her right front leg. Once she arrived in NY, we saw with our own eyes that Halo wasn't in good shape. Her right front leg (which is normal length) bows out at the elbow and is very thick. Her carpus (wrist) bones are very "downed" when she walks due to all the weight she has put on to that leg while she was growing. She also likes to stand on her back legs a lot and that too has resulted in her being a bit down on her back feet as well.
Halo had several radiographs taken and saw our rescue vet recently. Her left front leg is indeed a birth defect. Radiographs relieve that Halo has very severe elbow dysplasia in her right front elbow. There are three forms of elbow dysplasia, Halo has ununited anconeal process (UAP). What that means is that the anconeal process- a small bone of three bones that make up the elbow joint is ununited- it did not fuse to the joint prior to the growth plates closing. So the bone is just floating around her elbow joint and causing lots of damage. Halo already has arthritic changes in her joint and shoulder, both from the UAP and from having to compensate a large portion of her upper body weight on to that leg due to not having her front left leg. Oddly, her front left leg (what is there) does have callus formation on it meaning she has used it to get around. Thankfully, Halo's hips and knees are in great shape. Halo will be going to Cornell University to see their ortho specialist. She will also be seeing our local animal rehab center to start discussing her options. We will be looking at both a prosthetic limb for her left front and possibly a cart that is made to support her front end. There are a few surgery options for her elbow dysplasia that we will be discussing with the specialist to see which is the best option for her as well.
You really have to meet Halo to understand how she can go through all this. She is the sweetest, most determined little pup I've met in my many years of fostering. Every morning she greets me with a hug, and I mean a hug because she will stand up on her hind legs and put her front legs on me with her head against me as well. And again whenever I come home she does the same. She loves to cuddle and will happily curl up in your lap. She's a playful girl who likes her toys, loves to chase other dogs around and will if all that isn't available, she'll play with your feet. If she isn't playing or cuddling in your lap, she's snoozing on one of the dog beds. Halo doesn't know she's not perfect. If she's in pain, she doesn't let it show. We're still making her take it easy anyway, so to limit any further damage to her elbow.
Update: Halo went to Cornell in to be evaluated by their surgeons and had CT scan done of both her front legs. The surgeons and radiologists discussed Halo's CT results and believe Halo's elbow is too far damaged for surgery as she has a large degree of arthritic changes already. We were saddened to learn this as it does mean there is nothing at the time being we can do to help reverse her damage and fix her elbow dysplasia. However, Halo is a good candidate for a front end cart and a prosthetic leg for her shorter front leg, both which will help reduce the strain on her bad elbow. Halo has been measured for her cart and that should be arriving in the next few weeks. It will take some time for Halo to adjust and learn how to use her cart properly and we'll help her along. We are also helping manage her pain medically, with daily joint supplements, pain medication when needed and adequan joint supplements. Halo needs donations to help with her care. Our goal is to help Halo have a good quality of life, being happy and as pain free as possible. We'll do everything we can to do that for her. Please consider being a part of that by donating. Halo is an amazing girl who touches the hearts of all who meet her.
Update: Halo's cart has arrived, she has been fitted to it and is now learning how to use it. It will take time for her to adjust as she's not used to walking in such manner that the cart requires- upright! We're still making adjustments with the cart as well to get it to fit her just right. She'll spend a little bit of time using it each day and getting comfortable with it before she's out and about with it. We hope over time as she adjusts, she'll be able to use her cart to be out and about for longer periods of time and take a lot of stress off her front right leg.
BDBH's would like to thank the many veterinarians that have helped us diagnose Halo and provide her with her needs. Cornell Companion Animal Hospital http://www.vet.cornell.edu/hospital/companion.htm where Halo had her CT and surgical consult, Mendon Village Animal Hospital http://www.mendonvillageanimalhospital.vetsuite.com/Templates/bracket.aspx whom saw Halo when she first arrived to us and referred her to Cornell. They are also helping us get her anxiety under control. Theravet Acres http://www.thera-vet.com who helped us do her measurements for her cart and will be working with us to fit her for a prosthetic. Theravet is currently looking into the best company to work with for Halo's prosthetic. Lastly Eddies Wheels http://www.eddieswheels.com where BDBH's got Halo's front end cart from. BDBH's and Halo herself thank everyone who has provided donations for her.

Meet Cammie. Cammie is 9 month old female GSD Mix. Cammie is a very outgoing puppy at home who craves attention from her people. She is a typical young dog who needs mental stimulation and excercise. Cammie is a very smart girl, learns new things very quickly and is very food motivated. Cammie is currently attending obediance classes to learn her basic manners and to continue her socialization. She is currently living with three very dog savvy cats and doing well. Cammie is also living with four other dogs and doing well with them. Cammie needs to be introduced to new dogs slowly as she has had a bad experience in the past and can be frightened at first. Once she feels comfortable she is very playful and loves her doggie friends. She is currently attending doggie day care a few times a week and making lots of new friends. She can also be a little shy at first with strangers but a little food goes along way with her and will soon be your best friend. Cammie will require her forever family to include another dog as she gains a lot of confidence from her canine friends. So a well balanced dog is a must for Cammie to show her the ropes. Cammie also needs to be in a home without young children as quick movements can scare her easily. Cammie is looking for a home where she can continue to have positive experiences with both humans and other dogs. A quieter home will suite her best.

Introducing Keena! Keena is a beautiful 3-4 year old long haired German Shepherd Dog. She has come to BDBH from a very rural shelter in Georgia. Since Keena was found as a stray we know very little about her other then that she came into the Georgia shelter with an injured leg. At the time that she was found she had no use of her leg and a fairly bad wound on her paw from where her leg had been dragging.
Keena was soon on her way to NY and in addition to knowing that she had an injury to her leg she also tested heartworm positive. Not long after being in NY Keena was seen by a number of wonderful vets who confirmed a suspected case of FCE. Please see this link for further information about FCE: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_fibrocartilaginous_embolism.html. After a number of weeks of intensive physical therapy Keena has been able to successfully gain back a descent amount of control over her leg. While her vets agree that she will never have full use of her leg again she does a great job using it to balance and get around. Keena has also begun her heartworm treatment and once she has completed that will be able to be spayed.
While Keena's leg will never work like normal she is the most loving and sweet girl. She is social with all people that she meets and just wants to roll over and have her belly rubbed. She is will also just cover you in kisses if given the opportunity. Keena does well with all dogs and walks well on a leash. She also is both crated at times in our home a left free and does amazingly well with both. While Keena still has a little while before she will be fully recover she is looking forward to having a forever home to call all her own!
Keena is one of the BDBH heartworm six. Heartworm treatment averages $700 for a large dog. Would you help us help Keena with a donation today? For up to date information on how the six are doing with their treatments please go to our blog http://bigdogsbighearts.blogspot.com/

Hi, I’m Abby. Life for me hasn’t always been pleasant, but I am so thankful to be with all the wonderful people at BDBH!! I was turned in to a local animal control by my owners. Yes, you read that right!
I am a golden retriever mix and I currently weigh 32 pounds. I should weigh around 60 pounds. When my foster mom gave me a bath it felt so good!! Tons of dirt and grime came off of me and my coat was actually a buff and white when I was done. My foster mom found a huge scab on my neck that ended up being a place where either a rope or collar cut into it. It feels so much better now after the nice vet and vet techs cleaned it up for me yesterday and gave me some medicine. It really made me happy to be in a room with some many caring people. They came up with a plan for my foster mom to help get much needed good weight back on me. I’m eating many small meals all throughout the day and drinking lots of water.
My foster mom said it’s so good to see the life coming back in my eyes and can’t wait until they sparkle! My tail is always wagging and I love to hear what a good and beautiful girl I am!! I am not allowed to play too much right now since the vet said my body isn’t using the food yet so I’m on a restricted exercise program. That’s okay for now though because walking around does tire me out and besides I’ve been getting tons of love, hugs and petting from my foster Mom and Dad and 2 boys. I so love kids and can’t wait to run and play with them. My foster mom says to be patient and we are taking it slowly so I can turn into a beautiful and healthy girl. She says I’m already so beautiful and loving on the inside and once healthy the outside of me will reflect that too. I will have my foster mom keep everyone updated with my progress she you can watch me shine! My foster mom says that positive thoughts and prayers are so welcome during my recovery. I’m also going to be going through a lot of food and if you would like to help you can click the donate button. Life is getting so good right now!! Talk to you all later – Abby.
November 8, 2011 Update: Abby has been with us about 1 month and she is a totally different dog than the skinny girl who looked like she was ready to give up. Her eyes now sparkle all the time:) She has gained about 15 pounds and weighed in at 46 pounds yesterday!! The scars on her neck are all healed and once the fur grows back in you won't even know they are there. She is all about love and affection. Always happy and wagging her tail and gets so excited when the boys come home from school or her foster Dad comes home from work. She absolutely loves to play with our male dog and finds great satisfaction in licking his ears and his face. I do still monitor their play and don't let it go on too long as she still needs those calories and has a way to go to be back to a healthy weight. She already knew sit, shake, down, come, and stay and does a great job at sitting to get her meals and than watching me before she can have her food. She's just now started to jump up and counter surf which we are making sure she knows is not a good thing to do - the positive of this is that she is feeling like a dog again!!! She does well in her crate and seems to be housebroken. We have had a few accidents, but were expecting it as her body gets back up and functioning properly. She is a very smart girl who realizes that if she rings the bell on the door we know she needs to go out. I can't say enough good things about her:) She is a trooper and after everything she's been through she still trusts and loves:) She's even started going belly up for all of us and loves a good belly rub! We will never know all of her background, but at sometime in her life I would say she was a well loved dog and from here on out she always will be!!! Thank you all for the prayers and positive thoughts and donations for Abby they sure have been helping her along!! I will keep you posted on how this sweet girl is doing:)
November 14, 2011 Update: I went to the vet's this morning for my weekly weigh in and I gained 4 pounds and now weigh 50 pounds!!!! My foster mom says that now I just look like a very skinny girl, but am doing very well and gaining weight steadily. I have decided that this past week it was time to try to run again and boy does it feel good!!! I was previously just walking fast but tried running in the back yard with my foster families' 2 dogs and it was so much fun!!! My muscles are building up and I am feeling so much better:) I know I still need to gain more weight and am getting even more food now, but I was so excited and just wanted to share with everyone:) The tip of my tail is slowly healing as tails take awhile. Not sure what I did to it, but the end was all raw when I got to my foster family and so the vet shaved the tip. The boys I live with call it the mini hotdog! When I wag it too hard I bang it on things and keep opening it up and of course I love to wag my tail as I am so happy now!! Have I told you all lately that life is so good now? Well it is:) Thank you!!! Love, Abby

Hi there. My name is Aeris. I am a one year old Anatolian Shepherd mix. I have been with my foster mom for a few weeks now and I have already learned that the crate is not the scary place I thought it was, but a safe place to stay when my foster mom has to go to work, so I go in mine freely now. I am a bit nervous in new situations and rely heavily on my people to tell me everything is ok, so I will need a family who is willing to take me to training so I can gain some confidence in myself. I am very gentle when it comes to food and treats from my people, and am learning the correct way to please my people – as that is really all I want to do is be with my people.
I am friendly with other animals, however can be dominant with other dogs.

Hi, my new name is Lily and I am a little mixy girl just under a year old and 42 pounds. So maybe not a true big dog, but a big heart is in there for sure! I could have a lot of things in me: German Shepherd, Lab, Border Collie, maybe even Schipperke - who knows! I'm very shiny and bright like a little Christmas ornament.
In my short life, I've been in at least 6 different places, from shelters to homes back to a shelter, and I am now in a foster home, whatever that means! I am very new here, and just getting the hang of things. I am here to learn because I've missed some things that I should know, or so they tell me. So here is what I am working on:
1. In my one home I was housetrained on pee pads and kept indoors a lot, so I am learning that being outside is fun and that you potty on the grass, which I totally have down already. I like the applause I get when I do it, but it's a little strange, I have to say. I love the fenced yard because I can run and play. There's some weird stuff out there and it is SO cool to check it out while that lady watches me.
2. I am not allowed to use my mouth like hands anymore. Which kind of stinks, because if I had thumbs, I wouldn't need to do that! I am still trying to appeal that ruling even though I am learning other ways to get what I want. I am a super fast learner because I've only been here a couple of days and am already catching on. In the past, other people taught me the opposite, so I hope this person is right!
3. Just because I can jump on people, or push the little ones over to get from place to place faster, doesn't mean I should. So I am hoping for a forever family without small children.
I'm friendly and active, like other dogs and cats, joyful and even though I have never known what it is like to be somewhere for too long, I love people and get attached to my person quickly. I would like to learn tricks, or jump through hoops, chase balls, and the lady here keeps saying I'm versatile enough to do so many things if there is someone out there who thinks its fun to train a smart dog. It is so nice to hear good things about me.
Update: Hey, everybody! I am doing good at my learning. I've been going out and doing some different things and have had a lot of fun. I do have a little shoplifting problem at the Natural Pet Food Store, but Mr. Mario always gives me a complimentary pizzle stick. I like to go for rides, and I am a good ball player.
I am learning to be a big girl now, and like having consistency and things to do. I can make up lots of games on my own, which is good if someone is watching me. For some reason, she's not letting me make up games on my own if she's not watching me. I am good in my crate, and even make my bed look nice and neat.
I would like to try those games that people do with dogs, like agility or maybe flyball. I am good with other dogs, and even cats that are scary. I don't want to live in a home with children all the time, but I like them when I see them.
I would love a home with an active person, who also likes to talk to me and hang out like friends. That's all I really want, is a forever friend.

Hi, my name is Neka. I am a 6 month old mixed breed weighing in about 40 pounds. I’m timid around new people, although I warm up fast. I’ve lived with both dogs and cats and did well. I have also lived with toddlers, but they made me a little nervous at first.
I really like going on walks as I am just a pup and have quite a bit of energy! I also play nice with my ball and nothing makes me happier than a game of fetch. I enjoy chewing on my bone as well. Although, if you are sitting on the floor with me, I will most likely forget about my toys, cuddle up on your lap and give you kisses! I absolutely love getting attention from my owners!
I am an all around very happy little girl! I do have a lot of energy but I try really hard to please my owners. I absorb new information quickly and with puppy classes, I will absolutely thrive!

Introducing Marley. We are presuming Marley is a 2-3 year old Rottweiler mix, although we have not seen a lot of breed traits, other than love of her people and silliness. Marley weighs 60 lbs. and that appears to be a perfect weight for her. Marley was admitted to a local shelter because her family was moving. The information we were given on Marley's pre-BDBH life was that she lived her life as an outdoor dog and previously lived with another dog and children and did well.
What we have learned in the week that Marley has been with us is that she is:
- completely housetrained, if fact, we have seen no indication that she lived outside;
- does well in a crate, but also does well in house when we are home, i.e., no chewing, counter surfing, etc.
- knows sit and shake, but most importantly
- is super social with people and other dogs. She has been around teenagers, but we need to test her with young children still. She lives with large and medium breed dogs. We have not cat tested her, but can do so. She has not been around small breed dogs yet. Marley likes to play with the Cuzs and ropes at our house, she will play with the other dogs, with us, but will also entertain herself!
Marley loves attention from her people and wants to please. We are still getting to know Marley, as she is in the honeymoon/settling stage, however her personality thus far is appropriate and very loving. When you ask Marley to sit, her tush wiggles on the floor with excitement hoping for attention. Her current pictures do not show her personality.
More on Marley in the next couple of weeks.

We are no longer accepting applications for LeeAndra, adopters will be chosen from current applicants
LeeAndra is an 11 month old German Shepherd. She was surrendered to a local shelter because her owner had back problems and couldn't walk her. She is crate trained and housebroken. She has lived with small dogs and did well with them. She has not lived with cats but is good with them.
12/29 update
LeeAndra (fondly known as Leah) has only been with us for about a week now, however she is an absolute love. She is a standard GSD with beautiful markings. Leah appears to be very smart, exhibits a solid toy, as well as treat, drive and is learning quickly. She is very attentive and attaches/bonds quickly with human counterparts. Leah can be a bit tenative upon introduction with new dogs, however she is enjoying learning how to play with her new foster siblings. Leah has alot of energy and will thrive in an environment with someone who is active and has the time/capabilities to exercise her daily.

Maggie is an approximately 4 year old German Shepherd Dog who was turned into a shelter in Kentucky when her family divorced. Maggie was confused and stressed while in the shelter and luckily BDBH was notified and stepped in to help Maggie find a new, perfect, forever home.
Maggie is very sweet and sensitive girl who really would love a family who will provide her love, guidance and training. Maggie would do best in home experienced with sensitive dogs as Maggie is adjusting to her new surroundings and getting to know the rules and boundaries of her foster home. A confident and experienced handler would be ideal for Maggie. She is currently living within a home with other dogs and does well.
If you are looking for a loyal, sweet and intelligent GSD, Maggie is a perfect fit!
Breed experience will be require for Maggie's adopters, she will also be required to attend obedience classes. Maggie will not be placed with children.

Introducing Mya! Mya is a four year old grey and white Siberian Husky. Her eyes are considered parti colored and she is a bit on the smaller side weighing in at about 40lbs. Mya was first picked up in Vestal, NY when they were hit by the floods this past summer. She was reclaimed and then not too long ago she was again, found running. It was decided at that time that Mya would do best in a different home. Mya is a typical husky. She has a flare for the dramatics and will do best with a family who is familiar with the breed. Mya needs a confident and consistent handler. She would also really do best in a home with older children or no children as we feel that will be the best environment for her. Mya lives with three other fur-siblings and really loves to run and play with them so she would do well with anther dog in her home. Lastly, Mya rides wonderfully in the car and is quiet in her crate.

The Vets believe I am about 6 years old, and am up-to-date on all my shots along with being spayed before I came to the Shelter. Then my friends at BDBH rescued me. I love both adults and children. Playing with a squeeky toy, a ball especially, is what I love to do; especially when my foster mom throws it. I bring it back, but like to play keep-away. I am learning new things everyday, like to walk nicely, sit and down. I even go into my crate now when my foster mom goes to work... Being a "smarty pants" I learn very quickly. I get along very well with my foster brother, and the resident Shepherd. We all play outside together and sleep next to eachother at nite. I am very confident and love to be praised and hugged. Treats are especially welcome, as I would do anything for a treat.

Hi there! My name is Roxy and I am what my foster moms calls a “Heinz 57 poochie” as I’m not really sure what kind of dog I am besides a happy one! I am medium size, and we think under a year old, but am a lover, lover, lover of everything! I live with 5 other really big doggies and get along with all of them. I am docile when I meet them and love to play with them. I really like to cuddle with one of them if she lets me! I also live with kitties and am curious about them, but right now I am more interested in being with my foster family. Sometimes I am so excited to see my foster mom, I forget to go outside to go potty because I would rather hang out with her, but I don’t have any accidents!
I also live with two little boys 5 & 8, and I do get very excited with all the doggies and people here to play with, so I sometimes forget and get a bit jumpy, but I then calm down after a few minutes. Though I have only been with my foster mom for just a few days now, I already know the routine! I learn quick! More on me as my foster mom gets to know me better:
If you are interested in more information on Roxy, please contact my foster mom

Hi! My name is Daisy. I'm a 11 month old lab/shepherd mix and weigh about 60 pounds. I am a true puppy at heart and often tire my foster parents out when playing ball. I could play fetch all day long. I'm even learning how to drop the ball. I live with a cat and I'm doing better at leaving her alone but sometimes she teases me and I forget- I just want to play! Since I'm still a pup my parents say I need something called 'confidence'. I tend to get nervous in new places and around new people. It seems like new people always have liver treats though so I'm finding out they aren't so bad. I'm very shy around other dogs but I'm going to obedience to help with that. I'm still not sure about the crate but it's growing on me. I'm doing a lot of learning, that's for sure. Oh and I think snuggles are the best.
Daisy's adopters will be required to attend obedience classes to continue her socialization
